Twenty years ago, rarely did I come across a bar that was dedicated to that classic botanical spirit known simply as gin. In fact, most people were familiar with only the standards, namely Bombay Sapphire or Tanqueray. Occasionally I would get the Monkey 47 from some spirit connoisseur. And when it came to a gin cocktail it was almost always the classic Gin-Tonic. But over the last ten years there’s been a gin renaissance, a resurgence of the botanical spirit. Some say its due to the craft cocktail revival. Others mention that the “trendification” back to gin was due to the spirit’s romantic prohibition past, speakeasys, etc. Perhaps helped in part by the revitalized speakeasy scene or vice-versa?
In any case, there are now numerous gin-centric bars throughout the states, and they seem to be drawing the attention of not only the gin purists but also the hipster youth. Starting on the west coast here are some of my favorites.
Whitechapel in San Francisco (opened in 2015) boasting over 600 gins. This beautiful Victorian-era underground gin oasis celebrates the diversity of gin. And a visit here is often standing room only. Experience: 9/10
Scofflaw in Chicago is another fantastic gin old world paradise with over 100 different gins on the menu. Like Whitechapel, this gin parlor is decorated in the classic Victorian style. From the moment you step in the unmistakable aromas of juniper and other botanicals dance in the air. Experience: 9/10
Bathtub Gin in New York is a prohibition-era bar that lies hidden behind a coffee house storefront in Chelsea. Serving 30+ gins this speakeasy-inspired public house is punctuated by its namesake with a full-size copper claw foot tub in the center of the room. I went there for the handcrafted cocktails and the lively atmosphere but was pleasantly surprised by the menu. Experience: 10/10
The Gin Joint in Charleston, South Carolina lies in the heart of the French Quarter on East Bay St. Charleston is America’s treasure and to launch a gin-centric bar secures its place in my heart. Carrying roughly 80 gins this mixology haven keeps their gin creations fresh and creative. A must stop when visiting olde Charles Town. Experience 9/10
